Staff Engineer
Are you a Staff Engineer ready to lead complex integrations, APIs and data architecture for a major UK Defence programme? Join 4C Strategies and shape the future of military readiness.
Who we are
4C Strategies is a leading provider of organisational readiness and military training management solutions, serving clients in over 70 countries. Our flagship software, Exonaut, is widely adopted by NATO and allied forces for exercise planning, execution, and evaluation. Exonaut supports real-time exercise planning across military headquarters and agencies, facilitates staff and command briefings, and enables evidence-based decision-making. The platform's scalability allows for remote, real-time exercise planning, enhancing training efficiency and readiness. 4C Strategies' team of military consultants and software engineers collaborate globally with various armed forces, including those of the UK, US, Sweden, Australia, Canada, Norway, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and Finland, to develop and deliver tailored training and exercise management solutions.
Your Role
We’re looking for a Staff Engineer (Tech Lead) to provide technical leadership for our 4C engineering team on a large, multi‑year MoD programme — one of the most significant training transformation efforts in UK defence today. You’ll hold the team’s technical context, help shape how Exonaut® meets the customer’s needs, and partner closely with our Engineering Managers and Product Owners.
There’s real engineering substance here: shaping how Exonaut connects with MoD and partner systems, how training data flows through the platform, and how we keep complex integrations reliable, secure and easy to evolve over many years.
This is a Staff role that stays close to the work. You’ll be alongside the team — helping scope the hardest problems, clearing blockers, and rolling up your sleeves on the parts that need you most. As your coding time naturally shrinks, your impact grows through the standards you help set, the engineers you support, and the architecture you steward across data, integrations and APIs.
Day to day you’ll collaborate with other engineers, project managers and designers on the programme, with senior stakeholders on the customer side, and with peers across the wider 4C engineering organisation — where the IC track is treated as a first‑class career path alongside management.
What you’ll do
Hold the technical vision for our work on the programme, in close partnership with Engineering Management, Product and Delivery.
Shape the architecture across data, integrations and APIs — including how Exonaut connects with MoD and partner systems, and how training data flows through the platform.
Help scope the team’s most complex initiatives end‑to‑end, and share implementation work across the team so others can grow while you remain accountable for the outcome.
Help raise our engineering standards around design, code quality, security, performance and operability.
Mentor Senior Engineers toward Staff‑level scope, and represent engineering thoughtfully with customers, partners and 4C peers.
About you
An experienced engineer who still enjoys writing code, with several years operating at Senior Engineer level or above and a track record of guiding non‑trivial technical work across a team or cluster of teams.
Sound architectural judgement around data modelling, integrations and API design (REST, event‑driven and similar). You weigh long‑term consequences without losing sight of short‑term delivery.
Comfortable being a team’s technical point of reference — you lead through influence, partnership and consistently good judgement, rather than formal authority.
Experienced partnering with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, designers and Delivery Leads to shape roadmaps and untangle complex, ambiguous work.
A mentor by instinct who can point to engineers whose careers you’ve helped shape.
Clear, considered communicator — both in writing and in person — including with senior stakeholders in regulated environments.
UK security clearance: if you already hold UK SC, that’s a plus. We’re equally happy to hear from candidates who are eligible for, and willing to undergo, SC clearance.
A genuine interest in our mission — software that helps armed forces, public safety and resilience organisations train, prepare, and respond.
If you don’t tick every box but recognise yourself in most of the above, we’d still love to hear from you.
